Alumni Chairperson Greeting |
| As Chairperson of the UL-Lafayette College of Nursing and Allied Health Professions Alumni Committee, I would like to welcome to the first “edition” of the Alumni Newsletter. Our committee has recently had the opportunity to meet some of our goals by having this link available to anyone who accesses the ULL CON Homepage. Our committee is excited to be able to share with you, electronically, news and information that we feel the alumni would enjoy hearing, especially about things happening on our campus in the College of Nursing. In the past, we have had limited contact with our alumni due to infrequent mailings and not having a consistent way to receive information from our alumni except through the UL-Lafayette Alumni Association on campus. The newsletter will also provide an avenue for increased communication concerning events that this committee plans for CON alumni during the year. In this newsletter, you will read about an event held in October, 2007 which we would like to see grow and flourish with greater nursing alumni participation. At present, the newsletter is a “work in progress”. We will add and update information on the site once a semester and perhaps once during the summer months. Please share the availability of this link with fellow alumni in your workplace, your community and with your alumni friends. There is a “no reply” restriction for this link but my email information is available on the opening page. We would love to hear from you and have you share information with “your” alumni colleagues in nursing. We cannot promise that the newsletter will be able to handle all of the information that we receive but we do plan to have an “Alumni Spotlight” area to share some of the great things that our alumni are doing and achieving in our state and beyond!! Thank you for your assistance in “spreading” the word for us. Keep us in your “favorites” and “visit us” on line when you can! Faye B. NLN Center of Excellence |
| After two years of introspective planning and documentation in preparation for the application, the UL-Lafayette College of Nursing and Allied Health Professions was awarded a Centers of Excellence in Nursing Education distinction by the National League for Nursing (NLN), one of the leading professional associations for nursing in the United States. The NLN designation for “Excellence in Faculty Development” is one of three focus areas offered. UL Lafayette College of Nursing and Allied Health Professions is one of a select few universities in the United States that have received the NLN’s prestigious Excellence designation for creating an environment that promotes ongoing faculty development. The application process included a site visit by several consultants who observed many unique distinctions of our faculty. The College of Nursing faculty at UL-Lafayette have created a community of creative scholars and continues to nurture new faculty into the teaching and the scholarship role. It is the opinion of the NLN that the faculty of the College of Nursing have one of the best work environments in the country! The Award was presented at the Education Summit in Baltimore, Maryland which is attended by over 1400 nurse educators. |

Simulation Labs |
| The Critical Care Simulation Lab located at UL Lafayette College of Nursing and Allied Health Professions is the first and only facility of its kind in Louisiana. It contains 6 patient simulators equipped with ICU monitoring that can be programmed by instructors to exhibit the same, quickly changing scenarios as seen in the ICU. Scenarios that play out in the day-to-day world of the intensive care will be re-created in the critical care lab through the use of highly advanced simulation technology. With use of the Critical Care Simulation Lab nursing faculty are able to provide the essential bridge to clinical practice. Students are able to transfer the knowledge obtained in the didactic portion of the course and apply it in a simulated intensive care unit before actually utilizing concepts and skills in a live setting. In the Fall, 2007 semester, we were privileged to open our Maternal-Child Simulation Lab. With a nursery areas, a pediatric room and a L&D/maternity area, this simulation lab has made it possible for students to experience reality situations before and during their maternal-child clinical experiences. The Maternal–Child Simulation Lab contains: 2 Noelle maternity manikins, 3 Baby Sims, 2 Pediatric Vital Sims manikins and two “special needs” infants plus a variety of supplies and equipment specific to the care of infants and pediatric patients. As the Fall and Spring semesters concluded, faculty and students realized the benefits of these simulation labs for our students, enhancing their regular clinical experiences by offering guided case scenarios. Plans are in progress to use both the Adult and M-C simulation labs to develop programs for staff nurses in our community. Through our CON – CE department, these programs will facilitate RN’s in advancing their knowledge and skills in these specialty areas. |
