Simulation Lab Update

The UL Lafayette College of Nursing and Allied Health Professions considers itself one of the leading universities in our state in utilizing the simulation experience for our nursing students. It is the only university in Louisiana that has a simulated neonatal, pediatric and labor-delivery unit. The senior nursing students use sophisticated computerized simulators that mimic real-world hospital situations. This requires continual improvements in our equipment and continual development of our faculty in utilizing these simulation labs for student experiences. Our Adult Critical Care Simulation Lab and our Maternal-Child Simulation Lab have both received upgrades and updates over the summer as well as new equipment and capabilities for the fall semester.

Both of our Simulation Labs will soon have the capability of recording student participation in actual simulations with an audio/video feed to an area outside of the simulation lab where other students can view the live simulation as it develops. The MeTiVision system allows students who are not participating in the live simulation to observe their peers responding to the scenario directed by the faculty member. A “debriefing” room has been constructed where students and faculty will be able to discuss the scenario and the interventions performed by the students involved. It offers excellent teaching opportunities for students involved in the scenario as well as those observing the live simulations. Students will have the ability to critically evaluate themselves in “life-like” clinical settings.

The Adult Critical Care Simulation Lab is also piloting the use of the Elsevier Simulation Learning System with Medical Records. It will allow students and faculty to utilize a documentation system for the simulation experiences.

Another addition has been made to our Adult Simulation Lab for this semester. Starting this semester, a simulation experience is available for our psych/mental health students. The program is called “Hearing Voices that are Distressing: A training and Simulation Experience” by Dr. Patricia Deegan. The students listen to an audio track that simulates distressing voices. The students are given cognitive and hands-on tasks to do while listening to the audio portion (“voices”) in an effort to show them how difficult it is to concentrate on tasks/activities when “hearing voices”. The goals of this simulation curriculum are to help students understand the day-to-day challenges that people with psych/mental illness face, to help students become more empathetic to those patients and to aid students in developing coping strategies to better address the needs of these patients.
