Sigma Theta Tau International

The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International was founded in 1922 by six nurses at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, now the Indiana University School of Nursing, in Indianapolis, Ind, USA. The founders chose the name from the Greek words Storgé, Tharsos and Timé meaning "love," "courage" and "honor." The honor society became incorporated in 1985 as Sigma Theta Tau International, Inc. The mission of the Honor Society of Nursing is to support the learning, knowledge, and professional development of nurses committed to make a difference in health worldwide. The vision Sigma Theta Tau International is to create a global community of nurses who lead in using knowledge, scholarship, service and learning to improve the health of the world’s people.

The Delta Eta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International was established by a group of faculty members of the University of Southwestern Louisiana in October of 1976. The first induction ceremony was held in the spring of 1977. Membership is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, and to nurse leaders exhibiting exceptional achievements in nursing. Here are some additional facts about our membership:
  • More than 405,000 members have been inducted worldwide.
  • More than 130,000 active members make Sigma Theta Tau International the second largest nursing organization in the United States.
  • Members reside in more than 114 countries.
  • Sixty-one percent of active members hold master’s and/or doctoral degrees; 26 percent are staff nurse/clinicians; 20 percent are nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, or clinical specialists; 16 percent are administrators or supervisors; and 23 percent are educators or researchers

From the President

We are very excited about the upcoming year for Delta Eta Chapter. In the Fall of 2007, we inducted 46 new members; 5 graduate students, 2 nurse leaders, and 39 undergraduate nursing students.
At our April 30, 2008 Spring Business Meeting, I presented an update of the Chapter’s activities. Those present enjoyed a “brief”, but necessary business meeting, followed by a nice dinner and a fantastic presentation by Dr. Amalie Hollier.
In the coming year, there will be opportunities for members to get involved. I strongly urge everyone to consider participating in at least one chapter activity every year. The Chapter will benefit greatly from your interest and diversity.
Plan to visit the Delta Eta Website once a month for upcoming events.
In closing, I would like to express my thanks to all who have given of their time, knowledge, and resources to Delta Eta Chapter.

Best regards,
Donna M. Gauthier, PhD, RN, CNE
